Where is the cavitation plate on a motor?

The dealer set it at 1/2″ above the bottom of the hull when the motor is sitting level or straight up and down. When the motor is trimmed all the way down it is 1/2″ below the bottom of the boat but when trimmed up just a little there is slippage or some cavitation.

What does anti ventilation plate do?

The anti-ventilation plate (AVP) does not stop or help prevent cavitation. Its sole purpose is to prevent surface air from being sucked into the negative pressure side of the propeller blades. This plate creates a high-pressure barrier that prevents exhaust gases and ambient air from being sucked back into the blades.

Place your straight edge lengthwise against the underside of your hull, allowing 2′ or 3′ to hang off the back toward your outboard. Check the position of the anti-cavitation plate in relation to the straight edge. The bottom of the plate should be at or above the top of the straight edge.
