does ascites come and go

Symptoms and Causes

Cirrhosis is the most common cause of ascites. Other conditions that can cause it include heart failure, kidney failure, infection or cancer.

Does ascites fluid go away?

Ascites may go away with a low salt diet, and with diuretics (water pills) ordered by your provider. But sometimes a provider must drain the fluid from the belly using a special needle. View our Ascites Patient Fact Sheet for more information.

Can ascites reverse itself?

Stopping all alcohol intake, maintaining a healthy weight, exercising, not smoking, and limiting salt intake can help prevent cirrhosis or cancer that may lead to ascites. Ascites can’t be cured but lifestyle changes and treatments may decrease complications.

Is your abdomen hard or soft with ascites?

The shape of the abdomen may suggest that it contains fluid rather than fat. A person with ascites may also have a distended abdomen, which is hard and swollen. They may also experience rapid changes in weight and body shape.

What does ascites pain feel like?

People with mild ascites may have a normal-looking abdomen, whereas those with severe ascites may have a swollen or distended abdomen: Ascites can exert pressure on the abdomen, making it feel bloated. Increasing pressure on adjacent organs may cause abdominal discomfort as the abdomen grows larger.

What is mild ascites?

Ascites is the abnormal build-up of fluid in the abdomen. Technically, it is more than 25 ml of fluid in the peritoneal cavity, although volumes greater than one liter may occur. Symptoms may include increased abdominal size, increased weight, abdominal discomfort, and shortness of breath.

How quickly does ascites build up?

What are the symptoms of ascites? The fluid causes swelling that can make the tummy feel tight and very uncomfortable. It often develops over a few weeks but might happen over a few days.

What is the difference between ascites and bloating?

A large, bloated belly can be a sign of either ascites or a beer belly. The definition of ascites is an abnormal accumulation of fluid in the space between the organs in the belly and the wall of the belly. In the U.S., the most common cause of ascites is cirrhosis of the liver.

Why does ascites keep coming back?

Will the ascites come back? Sometimes, ascites builds up again over the following weeks and months after an ascitic drainage. Your doctor or nurse might recommend starting or continuing diuretic (water) tablets to try to help the fluid stay away for longer. Sometimes people need to have another ascitic drainage.

Does exercise help ascites?

Certain things that help prevent cirrhosis of the liver and cancer can also prevent ascites. This includes not drinking alcohol, staying at a healthy weight, exercising, not smoking, and limiting salt intake. Ascites can’t be cured. But lifestyle changes and treatments may decrease complications.

Can ascites be temporary?

With treatment, ascites can be temporarily reversed. But over time, more invasive treatments will be needed to temporarily reverse ascites. Eventually, most people with ascites will need a liver transplant.

How can you tell if you have ascites at home?

Have him or a helper firmly press the ulnar edges of his hands on the midline of the abdomen, to help prevent wave transmission through fat. With your free hand, firmly tap his left flank. If ascites is present, the tap will transmit an impulse through the fluid, which you’ll feel with your palm on his right flank.

What does ascites look like when lying down?

The shape of the abdomen often suggests ascites fluid. On lying down, the flanks are full but on standing the ascites fluid accumulates in the lower abdomen. The high intra-abdominal pressure may push out an umbilical hernia or even an inguinal hernia. There may be stigmata of other diseases.
