harbor freight jointer

A while back I purchased a Harbor Freight 8″ Jointer for $350 on sale. The idea behind the jointer was to buy something that could be used in my basement shop and removed without too much trouble.

Can you use a planer as a jointer?

A planer can be used as a jointer by following a few woodworking tricks. Woodworking jointers and planers are used to mill wood so they can be used to build furniture and other projects to correct dimensions.

What is a jointer vs planer?

The jointer will give you a perfectly square single edge and flatten that single side, whereas the planer will give you consistent thickness and parallel surfaces. Jointers have their cutting knives embedded in the table with the wood passing over them, whereas planers cut from above the wood.

Do you really need a jointer?

Simply purchase your lumber already milled in S3S or S4S form (surfaced on three sides or surfaced on 4 sides). How can you flatten a board if you only have a planer?

In order to flatten a warped, twisted, or cupped board, a common approach is to first use a jointer to create one perfectly flat face. Then you run the board through a thickness planer with the flat face downward, and the planer makes the top face parallel to the bottom.

What size jointer do I really need?

Choosing by size

Without any auxiliary extensions, a jointer can comfortably handle lumber about twice as long as the bed, so bed length, along with blade size, dictates the size of material the tool can process. The smallest size useful to most woodworkers is the 6-in.

What size jointer is best?

But these usually require more tools and more time. So in my opinion, an 8″ jointer is the best long-term investment.

What should I look for when buying a jointer?

Length & Style of the Jointer Bed and Fence? Jointer Bed Length: The length of a jointer bed is another important consideration when buying a power jointer. The longer the bed (which is made up of an infeed table and an outfeed table) the more stability you’ll have when flattening and jointing a board.
