Respondents from English-speaking countries besides the U.S. will have to say whether it is “common for one to say 1600 hours (read as sixteen hundred hours) to mean 4:00 pm” there.

How do you say 2000 in military time?

“Two zero hundred” formally, “Twenty hundred” informally. But I would write it as 2000, not 20:00, so I guess I would be more likely to read the version with the colon as twenty hundred. Never “twenty hundred hours”!

How do you say 0015 in military time?

The 12-hour clock time 12:15 a. m. would be 0015 , pronounced “Zero hundred one-fife” or “Zero hundred fifteen” as military time.

Why do we not use military time?

In the USA, the military and scientists prefer 24-hour time. 18:00 hours can mean only one thing whereas 6:00 might be early in the morning or early evening. Clocks and watches are easier to read aloud with only the traditional twelve numbers.

Does military time have a colon?

Military time uses a leading zero and doesn’t have a colon, while 24 hour time uses a colon but not a leading zero. For example, 8 o’clock AM is shown as 0800 in military and 8:00 in 24 hour time. 8 PM would be 2000 (military) and 20:00 (24 hour).
