screw it again
Assuming that the screws don’t feel loose when you remove them due to inadequate length or pilot holes that are too large, you can reuse the holes. I’ve done just that a thousand times with everything from knickknack shelves to solid wood doors. The point of concern usually isn’t the holes, but the screws.
How do you screw a stripped hole?
If you have a stripped-out screw hole and can’t use a larger screw, simply apply some wood glue to a few toothpicks and shove them into the hole. Once the glue dries, cut off the protruding ends of the toothpicks and drive the screw. Just be careful not to overtighten the screws or you’ll strip the hole again.
Do you need screw anchors for wood?
You do not need plastic or metal wall anchors for this. You will first need to locate the wooden wall studs. Use a stud finder to be able to locate the studs. They are usually 16″ apart from one another but varies depending on when your house was built.
How do you fill a Redrill screw hole?
Using wood fillers (such as FamoWood or Elmer’s) is one of the best among all the methods as they can easily cover the old holes, cracks, and gaps permanently. These wood fillers make the wood so hard that you can redrill or screw it into them without damaging the wood itself.
Can you reuse a stripped screw?
Extra Tip: Never… ever… ever try to reuse a stripped fastener. Always replace the fastener with a new identical screw.
Can I reuse stud?
First, if a stud is being tensioned (not torqued), then it’s fine to reuse them, as torque doesn’t come into play. Second, if a person is willing to run the threads on both the studs and nuts with a tap-anddie, thus renewing the threads, then the fasteners can safely be reused.
Can I reuse stud holes?
Reuse the same holes as is, as long as there is resistance as I screw it back in. Jam some toothpicks into the hole to increase tension before replacing lag bolts. Same as #2 but include some wood glue. Use wood filler in the hole (make sure it gets deep inside), then remount.
Does screwing into wood weaken it?
When you drive screws into wood without drilling pilot holes, you’re essentially pushing wood out of the way to make room for the screw. That displaced wood puts more pressure on the wood surrounding the screw, which can lead to splitting and cracking, weakening the wood over time.
What do you do if a screw won’t tighten?
If a screw is only a little loose, it will often help to coat the threads of the screw with glue before tightening it. The classic repair, and probably the best, is to enlarge the old holes with a drill so that 1/4-inch or 3/8-inch dowels can be glued into each hole.
What is a screw anchor?
Screw anchors are inserts, typically made from plastic, metal, or fiber, which enable the attachment of screws into brittle materials — such as masonry or dry wall.
Do I need an anchor for a shelf?
If you’re going to be attaching your floating shelf and bracket to a wall stud, you do not need any anchors. If you are working with plaster or drywall, however, additional support is necessary. Wall anchors, also called molly plugs, will help you build a sturdy foundation for your shelf.
